This paper approaches the role of plant resources in the subsistence practices of pre-Hispanic native groups that inhabited the floodplain of the Paraná River. Available ethnographic and historic documents show a great use of such resources, though archaeological researches only started to focus on this item in this century. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to produce a synthesis of the information included in the historic and ethnological sources in order to integrate it with archaeological data of populations that inhabited the alluvial plain of the Paraná River and adjacent zones. Despite the complexity to approach them, archaeological investigations tend at present to reconsider the place of plant resources within the past human cultural practices.
