Analyses the open and simultaneous primary election system (paso) in Argentina, based on the debate reignited by its temporary suspension in 2025. It takes a qualitative approach, focusing on a case study, with the strategic incorporation of elements of comparative analysis. The investigation focuses on the effects of the system, considering the arguments put forward, institutional assessments and available regional evidence. It combines normative analysis, electoral data collection and comparison with open primary models in Latin America and the United States. The study evaluates three initiatives promoted to improve the current system and demonstrates that, far from solving the problems, they may intensify symbolic ungovernability, institutionalize distribution without real competition, and deepen participatory inequality. It concludes that the paso has not democratized the selection of candidates but rather has enabled scenarios of early polarization and simulated openness.
