From a reading of the theoretical basis and ethical decisions outlined in the "Deliberación" held by Roland Barthes in 1979 on whether to keep a writer‘s diary with a view to its publication, we analyze a set of other Barthes's essays and fragments about the diary, and his own diarist's exercises (mostly published posthumously), in the context of literary-existential search, expressed in ―Mucho tiempo he estado acostándome temprano‖ (1978), a "third gender‖, neither novel nor essay, which enables the transformation of life into work. Besides discussing some of Barthes's critical statements about the lack of actuality of the writer‘s diary, first raised in 1966, we assess the ethical and literary strengths and limitations of his ―simulacra‖ of diary, with particular attention to ―Noches de Paris‖ and Diario de duelo.
