In the last years the increasing vulnerability of the labour markets to the macroeconomic shocks (and their consequent variations in the GDP) has been identified like one of the main employment problems in Latin America. However, the variations in the product do not affect all the workers in the same way. Specifically, it is observed that the evolution of adults’ employment is more stable with respect to the variations of the GDP than young people’s one. Because of their quality of new entrants to the labour market, young people would have neither the specific training nor the job tenure which protect the adult workers against the fluctuations of the market. Does a phenomenon of this type occur in Argentina? If it is so, which is the explanation of the difference in the adjustment of youth and adults employment to the variations in the product? Can this be one of the central causes in the explanation of the major rates of unemployment among young people? These questions guide the present work.
