Abstract

Perhaps one of the enigmas that the voice holds lies in its materiality. One query naturally leads to another: Of what type of matter does it consist? To what sphere does it pertain? Where does it take place? How is its articulation engendered? In what manner may we contemplate the singularity or multiplicity inherent in vocal expression? This study endeavors to reexamine these inquiries and their persistent iterations through the literary contributions of esteemed scholars such as Giorgio Agamben, Roland Barthes, André Le Breton, Adriana Cavarero, Michel de Certeau, Laura Odello, and Peter Szendy, among others. Beginning with an exploration of the singularity and articulation of the voice, this essay situates itself within the context of Latin America (with particular emphasis placed upon the insights offered by Édouard Glissant, Davi Kopenawa, and Yánaya Aguilar Gil). From this vantage point, it introduces a novel conceptual framework: phonic fiction—a distinctive methodological approach aimed at probing the instability or suspension of language at its threshold of signification. The examination of the voice unfolds within a multidisciplinary discourse (drawing from the realms of philosophy, linguistics, anthropology, and poetics). Central to this endeavor is the engagement with the matter of the voice, which underpins the proposition of a phonic materialism characterized by the movements of inscription, typification, and linguistic fictionalization. The voice is construed as a form of material insubordination, wherein its subversive potential lies in its capacity to expose the inherent instability within the discipline of linguistics, thereby fostering an opening of possible indiscipline. Through the unfettered use of fiction, this study advocates for a phonic imagination to fictionalize the always fugitive matter of the voice, to debate its exclusive belonging to language, and to enable the resisted power of its fictions.
