The smartphone, that 15 cm device that we usually keep in our pockets or on our desks, is much more than a tool for communication with family, friends and colleagues. It can be an important ally in archaeological fieldwork. In this respect, its relative low cost, portability, intuitive use and versatility make it a useful tool, which compensates for certain comparative limitations with specific instruments, such as Swiss Army knives. In this sense, the aim of this paper is to analyse the use of mobile phones in archaeological work in order to evaluate their potential and their limitations. Specifically, different applications that facilitate three fundamental tasks in field archaeology are presented and exemplified: recording and measuring, geopositioning and generation of photogrammetric models.
