The Sarmiento basin has been inhabited since at least the end of the Middle Holocene; however, the greatest amount of evidence of human occupations corresponds to the Late Holocene. This paper presents the results of the excavation and study of archaeological materials from four sites dated to ca. 4000 years BP at La Campanita Alto archaeological locality, south of Lake Colhué Huapi, Chubut, Argentina. The stratigraphy, geomorphological context, formation processes, archaeofaunal materials and lithic artifacts that comprise the sites are analyzed. It is inferred that the occupations by hunter-gatherers around the shore of the Sarmiento paleolake would have been short-term, made up of small, highly mobile groups of guanacos hunters. The characteristics of these occupations are discussed and the results are compared with the archaeological contexts of the Late Holocene in the Sarmiento basin. In general terms, there are differences between the periods in terms of the density and diversity of the materials that make up the sites, especially with regard to their archaeofaunal contents.
