The relationship between the chemical structure, mechanical properties and thermal resistance of resols with different formaldehyde to phenol molar ratios (F/Ph) was studied. The resols with the higher crosslinking network (F/Ph=1.4 and 1.6) were the most resistant to high temperatures. Blends of the resols with different epoxy-amine systems were characterized. A glass fiber composite material with blends of an epoxy – amine system and resol matrices has been prepared. Although the addition of a 20% of the epoxy – amine system to the resol improved their mechanical properties and processability, a lower fire resistance was observed. However, the surface treatment of the glass fiber improved mechanical properties not affecting the fire resistance of the composite materials.
