The article analyzes the problematizations of consumption in the debates on development and dependency that took place during the third quarter of the 20th century in Latin America. Dovetailing the History of Economic Thought and the Sociology of Problematizations with the discursive analysis of documents, the contributions of ECLAC structuralism, dependentism and debates about development styles are put into dialogue. It is concluded that in Latin America questions were asked about consumption from a perspective attentive to the specific problems of the region, involving substantive revisions of those proposed by the economists of the central countries.
