The sustainable use of wild guanaco fiber is a productive activity that complements traditional cattle ranching and offers the possibility of operating simultaneously as a conservation strategy and economic development, promoting coexistence between production and wildlife. This activity allows the rural population to have a positive valuation of this species, given by an economic return, providing incentives for its conservation. In this work, an analysis is carried out to establish the profitability of the use of wild guanaco fiber, in order to reconcile the economic dimension with its conservation. This study analyzed financial, tax, accounting and economic parameters that directly and indirectly affect the performance of the productive activity. Sensitive variables such as sales, costs and expenses were analyzed. Based on the analysis of operating costs, labor costs and taxes, the total cost is USD 78.23/kg for the first year and USD 68.96/kg of fiber for the second year. For both year 1 and subsequent years, the operating margin exceeded 45%. This study showed that the sustainable use of wild guanaco fiber is economically profitable; therefore, this productive activity could contribute positively to the regional economies of Patagonia. In addition, it represents a great opportunity for productive diversification and conservation of this key species in Patagonian ecosystems and constitutes a concrete action aimed at coexistence between productive systems and wildlife.
