In this paper I reflect on the task of linguistic documentation of minority languages, which, for the most part, have few records and, in some cases, few speakers. Specifically, I intend to address the experiences and transformations that resulted from my work documenting Tapiete, the Tupi-Guarani language (TG) spoken in Tartagal and in Mission La Curvita, on the banks of the Pilcomayo River, province of Salta, Argentina. Without previous linguistic documentation except for some 600 words published in the first decades of the 20th century, the Tapiete was, towards the end of the same century, one of the last undocumented languages of Argentina. Based in Argentina, Bolivia and Paraguay, the Tapiete people developed in each of these countries’ different linguistic attitudes that, in Argentina, were reflected in a marked process of linguistic retraction, with the consequent abandonment of the language. In this context, I reflect on the urgency of a grammatical study as a primordial input for the written registration of the language and the elaboration of didactic materials, as well as on the need to approach the study of the lexicon, closely related to ethnographic aspects.
