The investigation of caregiver burden poses a significant challenge, given the persistent disagreement surrounding its definition, application, and study. This article aims to survey the various conceptualizations that “caregiver burden” construct has undergone in scientific literature, as well as the multiple instruments developed for its measurement. To this end, a bibliographic search was conducted in the databases of Redalyc, Cochrane Collaboration, Latindex, Medline, Lilacs, and EBSCO. Three conceptualizations are highlighted: the unidimensional perspective conceives caregiver burden as a global mediating factor between the patient and the caregiver; the bidimensional perspective subdivides the burden into objective and subjective factors, and the multidimensional model considers all variables associated with this phenomenon. These findings are discussed in terms of their methodological limitations and the implications they hold for future research and clinical practice.
