The initiative to move the capital to Viedma-Carmen de Patagones has been scarcely explored in the urban planning reports of the 1980s, Alfonsinism, or in the city histories of that period. The lack of subsequent studies and analyses is also reflected in works on the Alfonsín government and the 1980s in general. Even the extensive subfield of international literature on 'capital transfers' or 'the creation of new capitals' has largely overlooked the project to relocate the capital to Viedma-Carmen de Patagones. In this context, this article seeks to examine both the near-complete absence of the issue in historical accounts of urban planning and the city, as well as in the literature on Alfonsinism, and the limited references to it, alongside the ways in which it is framed. The hypothesis we propose suggests that, due to technical and political reasons, the relocation challenges certain narratives and constructed periodizations, which helps explain both its marginalization and the lack of interest in its historical and contextualized analysis until recently.
