In this paper I introduce some observations and reflections on the art of street theater in Buenos Aires, developed in my ongoing Phd research in anthropology. In particular, I look into a drama school specialized in street theatre as one of the purposes of the Escuela Metropolitana de Arte Dramático (EMAD), which is to transmit in a formal academic purpose this kind of popular theatre, traditionally relegated to extracurricular contexts. It is an anthropological research, with specific reference in folk studies as a way to find the special features of this artistic language and its roots in local performing traditions. The method is related to an auto-ethnographic fieldwork and to a collaborative anthropology which searches constantly for dialogue and co-theorization with actors and actresses who actually practise street theatre. Particularly, I will introduce some theoretical and methodological approaches to the fieldwork, and then some historical information about the trajectory of street theatre in Buenos Aires. Therefore, we can see how this trajectory is reflected in the development of this pedagogical purpose. Is possible to see the admission of this purpose into the educational offering of the EMAD as a project of legitimation of this popular art in the institutional system of drama and its teaching methods.
