All 19 species of penguins live in the Southern Hemisphere. Penguins are present in the waters of Antarctica, the Southern Cone of South America, coast and islands of southern Africa, Australia, and New Zealand. The Galapagos specie is the only penguin to cross the Equator. Seven species are recorded for the Patagonian Sea and 4 of them reproduce along the coasts of Patagonia and the Malvinas Islands: Magellanic Penguin (Spheniscus magellanicus), Southern Rockhopper Penguin (Eudyptes chrysocome), King Penguin (Aptenodytes patagonicus) and Gentoo Penguin (Pygoscelis papua).
