This article aims at reconsidering the concept of self- translation (Popovič 1976) with regard to the study of Chicano writer Rolando Hinojosa’s fiction. More specifically, our goal is to provide a comparative analysis of Estampas del Valle (1973) and its self-translation into English, The Valley (1983) in order to establish the literary and translation procedures which relate and stand between these two works. Thus, our analysis will try to account for operations which can be inscribed within two main domains: the domain of literary creation and the domain of literary translation. The results will allow us to characterize the literary and cultural spaces in which these two works circulate and to evaluate the adequacy of the category of self-translation as opposed to that of (re)creation to describe the creative process at stake in The Valley.
