Biochar application to soils is a promising approach for the sustainable development of agriculture. Here, we assess manure-derived biochars compared with woody biochar on soil total C (TC), crop yield, CO2 and N2O emissions. A field experiment was conducted including one harvest of Sorghum Sudangrass. The treatments were eucalyptus wood biochar (EWBC), dairy manure biochar (DMBC), pig manure biochar (PMBC) and poultry litter carbonaceous material (PLCM). Two controls, with (NPK) and without fertilizer, were included. The increases in sorghum yield were associated with fertilizer and liming potential of biochar added, following the order PMBC > DMBC > PLCM> EWBC. Soil TC increased significantly with the biochars additions. No effect on CO2 emissions was found. N2O fluxes decreased 44% in EWBC treatment and no significant effects were found with the addition of PMBC and DMBC. In contrast, those fluxes were higher in PLCM treatment. NPK treatment had the greatest N2O emissions. Preliminary, our results show that manure biochars increased yield; while woody residues biochar increased soil C sequestration. Further research should focus on determining how long biochar effects on soil properties are.
