Epidemics have been one of the factors that significantly affected American population causing changes in the demographic structure. One of the areas affected by these issues were the Jesuit reductions, which by promoting a more sedentary settlement agglomerated more people, and therefore favored the emergence of epidemic diseases. The aim of this paper is to analyze what representations and practices circulated among Indians and priests during smallpox epidemics in mocovíes and abipones reductions during the 18th century. This allows us to explore how the mission became a place of conflict where different concepts and actions on health, disease and death were confronted and conjugated.
