I review what I conceive as the theoretical foundation of a sociology of literature in Argentina, through a joint reading of three essential books in this process: Conceptos de sociología literaria (1980) and Literatura/Sociedad (1983), by Carlos Altamirano and Beatriz Sarlo, as well as a previous anthology, Literatura y sociedad (1977), with a selection of texts and a prologue by them. I postulate and develop four descriptive and analytic axes: the division of intellectual labor to be found in each book and the progressive disciplinary foundation; the disciplinary self-inscription and its progressive dissolution; the asymmetry between literary studies and sociology; and the asymmetry between “the literary” and “the social”.
