The province of Jujuy is one of the priority Argentine provinces for the conservation of the Cactaceae family due to its high specific richness. These plants maintain populations of different phytophagous insects. In Quebrada de Humahuaca Cactoblastis doddi Heinrich fulfills its life cycle on Opuntia sulphurea Gillies ex Salm-Dyck. Up to the present, the mortality of the immature stages of this lepidopteran under laboratory conditions is not known. The aim was to expand the information regarding the life cycle of C. doddi on O. sulphurea under laboratory ambient conditions in order to establish bases for the development of a breeding protocol. Sampling was carried out in the town of San Pedrito (Tilcara department) located in the Prepuna of Jujuy. From larvae of C. doddi obtained in the field, laboratory rearing was carried out, the Law of Dyar was applied, the mortality of the immature stages was evaluated and the sex of the pupae was determined through two methodologies. A high mortality of eggs and larvae of C. doddi was recorded. In relation to the methods used to discriminate the sex of the pupae, the weighing technique was the most efficient. Female pupae were heavier than males. Through this study, new aspects of C. doddi breeding under laboratory environmental conditions were known, this information being useful to establish the bases of a breeding protocol.
