The essays of Karl Philipp Moritz (1756-1793) are of great importance for the history of aesthetics because of their inaugural reflections on the autonomy of art. Our work takes this statements as its starting point, but focuses on another aspect of this author's aesthetic thought, that of artistic creation. As early as Versuch einer Vereinigung aller schönen Künste und Wissenschaften unter dem Begriff des in sich selbst vollendeten (1785), his first programmatic writing on artistic issues, Moritz sketches a dichotomy between a true or authentic artist and a false or inauthentic one. The aim of this article will be to reconstruct and trace the representation of these two types of artists in Moritz's aesthetic essays, with a particular focus on the figure and variations of the inauthentic artist. We will see that, in dialogue with contemporary debates on the structural transformation of the literary institution and the justification of artistic production, Moritz directs a twofold critique –which he grounds in aesthetic terms– at both the minor artists of trivial literature and the dilettantes.
