We propose to analyze and comment on the scope and limitations of two ‘top-down’ projects, originated in the Ministry of Justice and Human Rights of the province of Buenos Aires and the Buenos Aires Penitentiary Service in coordination with other state offices. We will specifically address the “Mediators of Knowledge” and the “Literary Pavilions for Freedom” programmes, which focus on literature–a discipline that has been gaining ground in contexts of punitive imprisonment in Argentina for many years now. To this end, we will recover our own work in the aforementioned programmes, occupying the roles of “mediator” and “volunteer workshop leader” and we will focus on specific experiences to provide an account of their implementation, their objectives, obstacles, challenges and also the meanings attributed to them by the participants, recipients of the programmes.
