A question has crossed the historiography of the Spanish American Independence: Was it a revolution? This question has as a backdrop the question, not at all settled on the continuities and ruptures of colonial rule and the emergence of nation states Americans. The aim of this paper is to analyze the historiography on the subject. In this sense, we understand the processes that were started in 1808 and have led to American independence, were part of a comprehensive process that can only be understood from a global analysis, in which the American colonies were part of a larger universe , that of the Spanish Monarchy.
