Populismo y democracia liberal: Una tensa relación

Abstract

El presente trabajo explora las relaciones entre el populismo y la democracia liberal. Con este fin, se aboca inicialmente a clarificar una definición mínima de ambos términos capaz de sortear los equívocos que han atravesado los debates sobre la materia. Posteriormente se someten a revisión crítica tanto las interpretaciones que consideran al populismo un rasgo constitutivo de la política democrática como aquellas que sostienen que la coexistencia de la democracia liberal y el populismo es imposible en cualquier circunstancia. Finalmente se abordan los rasgos más disruptivos del populismo para un régimen democrático liberal, intentando fundamentar como, paradojalmente, en esos mismos rasgos anidan formas de adaptación que en ciertas circunstancias habilitan una tensa coexistencia.

This paper explores the relationship between populism and liberal democracy. Thus, we initially pay attention to clarify a definition of both terms in order to overcome the misunderstandings that characterize the discussions on the matter. Then, we critically rethink the interpretations in which populism is considered a constitutive feature of democratic politics as well as those who claim the coexistence of liberal democracy and populism as impossible under any circumstances. Finally we inquire the most disruptive traits of populism to a liberal democratic regime, trying to explain how, paradoxically, in those same traits nest forms of adaptation that enabled a tense coexistence in certain circumstances.
