Caracterización geológica y petrológica de la Fonolita Jaboncillo, Sierra de Valle Fértil, provincia de San Juan

Abstract

En el sector central de la Sierra de Valle Fértil aflora un domo fonolítico, aquí llamado Fonolita Jaboncillo (nov. nom.), rodeado por una brecha discontinua compuesta por fragmentos de rocas del basamento y clastos ígneos juveniles. La fonolita exhibe textura porfírica con feldespato alcalino (principalmente anortoclasa) como mineral dominante y egirina subordinada, ambos como feno- y microfenocristales. Es una roca subsaturada en sílice, Ne-normativa y se proyecta en el campo de las fonolitas en el límite con las traquitas según la clasificación TAS. Los valores del índice de alcalinidad la relacionan con el campo peralcalino. El patrón de REE normalizado al condrito se caracteriza por el enriquecimiento en LREE con relación a las HREE con un diseño de pendiente abrupta para las primeras y casi plano para las últimas. El fraccionamiento cristalino dominado por plagioclasa se infiere a partir del empobrecimiento en Sr y Ba y de la anomalía negativa de Eu. Asimismo, las anomalías negativas extremas en P y Ti manifiestan el importante papel del apatito y la titano-magnetita durante el fraccionamiento del fundido. Se sugiere una relación petrogenética entre la fonolita y basaltos alcalinos (Ne-normativos) presentes en el área mediante fraccionamiento cristalino en un marco tectónico extensional de intraplaca continental. Este parece ser el proceso ígneo dominante durante la cristalización. Las evidencias petro-estructurales indican que la Fonolita Jaboncillo representa un criptodomo que se emplazó en la brecha intrusiva producida por el rápido ascenso y desgasificación del magma, no descartándose para esta última una génesis freatomagmática endógena.

In the central section of the Sierra de Valle Fértil outcrops a domeshaped phonolite, named here Jaboncillo Phonolite (nov. nom.), rimmed by a disrupted breccia composed by basement and juvenile igneous rock fragments. The phonolite exhibits porphyritic texture with dominant alkali feldspar (mainly anorthoclase) and minor aegirine, both as pheno- and microphenocrysts. The rock is silica-subsatured, Ne-normative, and plots in the phonolite field close to the trachyte boundary in the TAS classification scheme. The values of the alkalinity index relate it to the peralkaline field. The chondrite-normalized REE pattern is characterized by enrichment of LREE related to the HREE, with a remarkably steep pattern for the first and almost flat for the last. Mostly plagioclase and K-feldspar crystal fractionation can be inferred from the depletions in Sr and Ba and negative Eu anomaly. Moreover, extreme negative P and Ti-anomalies underscore the important role of apatite and titanium-magnetite during melt fractionation. The petrogenetic relationship between alkali Ne-normative basalts found in the area and the phonolite, through fractional crystallization within an extensional intraplate continental setting, is suggested. Petro-structural evidences indicate that the Jaboncillo Phonolite represents a cryptodome-like intrusion emplaced into the endogenous phreatomagmatic breccia (diatreme) generated by the ascent and contact of magma with external underground water.
