This article serves a double purpose. On the one hand, it revises and sets the context in which sociocultural anthropology made his path in Argentina with researches carried in the field of ethnic studies from 1936 onwards. It focuses on indigenous alterity -historically a privileged aspect in the treatment of the ethnic question in Argentina placing on a side other dimensions of the subject- and presents some coordinates from which to connect the coincidences or proximities between the national and international academy framings of the subject and the natives’ demands, and also between natives’ claims and state policy. The work also poses the argument to the number of disagreements that have caused “blindness” and “deafness” as selective as lasting. On the other hand, it identifies some tendencies and challenges of its own at present regarding the disciplinary field conformation.
