Trabajo, género y servicios: experiencias y representaciones del trabajo en la hotelería. Mar del Plata, segunda mitad del siglo XX

Abstract

En una línea que transita por la historia social y por los estudios de género, esta tesis se propone abordar el trabajo en el sector hotelero marplatense en la segunda mitad del siglo XX poniendo en primer plano a los sujetos, a sus experiencias y representaciones. Reconstruimos las singularidades de un trabajo del sector de servicios personales atendiendo cuestiones vinculadas a la remuneración, el tiempo de trabajo, las emociones, los saberes y habilidades implicadas, la apariencia y arreglo del cuerpo de los trabajadores y trabajadoras, etc.Partimos de la idea de que el trabajo allí realizado presentaba vínculos y continuidades con el trabajo doméstico (remunerado y no remunerado) que habilitaron la inserción de una gran cantidad de hombres y mujeres en el mercado laboral aunque en muchos casos de manera estacional. Analizamos las implicancias y tensiones que generaba que una actividad realizada en la esfera pública y a cambio de una remuneración tuviera dichas continuidades con el mundo doméstico. Asimismo, abordamos los procesos de segregación ocupacional y mostramos las desigualdades y jerarquías de género que se daban en un espacio de trabajo compartido por varones y mujeres y en el cual se manifestaba una clara división sexual del trabajo. Recuperamos el género del trabajo -y no solo de los trabajadores/as- y focalizamos en un sector -los servicios- cuyas características no se correspondían con aquellas asignadas a la definición hegemónica (androcéntrica) de trabajo durante el apogeo de la sociedad salarial. Así, la investigación busca contribuir a la discusión en torno a la naturalización de las identidades femeninas y masculinas y superar el enfoque que asigna un espacio determinado a cada uno de los géneros. Al mismo tiempo, invita a repensar y otorgar mayor complejidad a la forma en que el trabajo ha sido interpretado en tanto categoría y en tanto práctica social y a tensionar la imagen que se ha construido sobre el mundo de trabajo urbano del siglo XX.

In the confluence of social history and gender studies, the present dissertation aims at studying the work in the hospitality industry in Mar del Plata during the second half of the twentieth century, by highlighting subjects, their experiences and representations. We reconstruct the singularities of a job in the personal services sector, dealing with issues related to remuneration, working time, emotions, knowledge and skills involved, workers' bodies and appearances. We depart from the idea that the work carried out in hotels has links and continuities with domestic work (paid and unpaid), which allowed the incorporation of large numbers of men and women in the labor market, although in many cases only for a season. We analyzed the implications and tensions generated by an activity which is carried out in the public sphere, in exchange for remuneration, that also has strong continuities with the domestic world. Likewise, we address the processes of occupational segregation and show the gender inequalities and hierarchies that took place in a workplace shared by men and women, with a clear sexual division of labor. We revisited the gender of work - and not only of the workers - and we focus on a sector -services- which characteristics do not correspond to those assigned by the hegemonic (androcentric) definition of work given during the peak of the salaried society. Thus, this research tries to contribute to the discussion on the naturalization of feminine and masculine identities, and attempts to overcome the approach that assigns a determined space to each of the genres. At the same time, it invites us to rethink and give greater complexity to the way in which “work” has been interpreted as a category and as a social practice and to rethink the image generated by the urban labor markets of the twentieth century.
