El diario de viaje (1783-1789) de Francisco de Miranda: tensiones entre el conocimiento del mundo y el conocimiento de sí

Abstract

El artículo procura examinar las representaciones del yo que Francisco de Miranda (1750- 1816) delinea en su diario de viaje. Producido entre 1783 y 1789 en forma simultánea a su travesía por Estados Unidos, Europa y parte de Asia Menor, este texto pertenece a una etapa de la trayectoria del autor que abarca desde su exilio del ámbito hispánico, perseguido por la Corona española y la Inquisición, hasta su sistemática dedicación al cometido independentista a partir de 1790. Un aspecto llamativo reside en el laconismo con el que el autor hace referencia a las condiciones bajo las que se desenvuelve su periplo y, como contrapartida, la abundancia de descripciones que recogen la diversidad de manifestaciones del entorno que capturan su interés. ¿Cómo hacer visible a ese yo subyacente tras una escritura atiborrada de reseñas? El análisis de autofiguraciones del sujeto de la escritura parte de la consideración de tres problemáticas ligadas entre sí: la índole histórica de las concepciones del yo, los géneros discursivos del diario y del relato de viajes y los planteamientos constitutivos de las "escrituras del yo".

The article attempts to examine the self-representations that can be found in the travel journals of Francisco de Miranda (1750-1816). Written between 1783 and 1789 and concurrent to his travels around The United States, Europe and part of Asia Minor, this text belongs to a period of the author’s career that spans from his exile from the Hispanic world, persecuted by the Spanish Crown and the Inquisition, to his unwavering commitment to the cause of Independence in the New World from 1790. One striking aspect rests in the brevity with which the author describes the circumstances under which the voyage takes place, while at same time chronicling an abundance of details of the events that capture his interest. How is it possible to depict the author’s inner self hidden in a body of work that was filled with detailed descriptions of the places he had journeyed to? Analysis of the self-representation in his diary is based on three interconnected issues: the historical nature of the self-concept, the discourse genres of the diary and the travel journal and the constitutive approaches of the writings of the self.
