Overexploitation and inadequate use of dryland ecosystems promote degradation and desertification processes. The National Observatory of Land Degradation and Desertification of the Argentine Republic is a national system for the evaluation and monitoring of land degradation and desertification that supports the Chaco SemiArid Pilot Site (SPChS) in the northeast of Salta. This communication presents the results of the socioeconomic indicators surveyed up to date that enrich the baseline and constitute an input for further analysis of causes and trends of degradation. Some of the indicators show limitations of human capital, which increases the vulnerability of productive systems, while the types of producers and land tenure observed force us to confront the paradigm that associates degradation and poverty, and redefine it from the current technologies and logics of appropriation of the Chaco forest environmental services.
