El capitalismo como religión: Introducción

Abstract

Se trata de la traducción de un boceto de Walter Benjamin escrito probablemente en 1921, nunca finalizado como ensayo independiente y que no forma parte de ningún libro y cuya temática, tal como lo indica claramente el título, consiste en entender el funcionamiento del capitalismo como una religión, sobrepujando la tesis weberiana acerca de la ética protestante y el origen del capitalismo, para formular una serie de hipótesis y propuestas que hoy vuelven a impulsar el debate crítico. La traducción propiamente dicha viene antecedida por un estudio introductorio y, al mismo tiempo, se añade una serie de notas crítico-filológicas que los traductores consideran necesarias para la lectura crítica de este esbozo benjaminiano acerca de las relaciones entre capitalismo y cristianismo.

This is a Spanish translation of a sketch by Walter Benjamin, probably written in 1921, which was never finished as an individual essay nor incorporated to any of Benjamin’s books. The essay’s main issue, as its title clearly indicates, consists in understanding how capitalism functions as a religion, refining Max Weber’s famous thesis on Protestant ethic and the rise of capitalism even further, in order to formulate several hypotheses and proposals that have stimulated critical debate up to today. The text of the translation is accompanied by a critical introduction and some philological-critical endnotes that the translators considered helpful for an accurate reading of this early sketch by Walter Benjamin about the relationship between capitalism and Christianity.
