¿De qué hablamos cuando decimos "Iglesia"?: Reflexiones sobre el uso historiográfico de un término polisémico

Abstract

El artículo propone una revisión del concepto de Iglesia que usualmente –y tácitamente- se utiliza en el campo historiográfico al abordar el estudio de las sociedades de antiguo régimen. Sostiene que los historiadores suelen confundir el monopolio sacramental del clero con una definición de tipo jurídico-político que ve en la Iglesia una entidad equiparable al Estado. Mientras la diferenciación canónica entre clero y laicado se remonta a los orígenes del cristianismo, la conformación de la Iglesia como una entidad jurídico-política es un fenómeno relativamente reciente, fruto de un proceso de secularización que encontró en la Iglesia misma uno de sus principales agentes.

The article proposes a revision of the concept of Church that is usually —and tacitly— employed in the historiographical field when addressing the study of ancient regime societies. It argues that historians tend to confuse the sacramental monopoly of the clergy with a legal-political type of definition which regards the Church as an institution comparable to the State. Whilst the canonical differentiation between clergy and laity can be traced back to the origins of Christianity, the conformation of the Church as a legal-political institution/organ is a relatively recent phenomenon, born of a process of secularisation that discovered in the Church itself one of its principal agents.
