¿Una esclavitud benigna? La historiografía sobre la naturaleza de la esclavitud rioplatense

Abstract

El presente trabajo analiza cómo se forjó en la historiografía la idea de que en el Río de la Plata habría imperado una "esclavitud benigna" en comparación con otras regiones en la misma época. Dicha hipótesis fue formulada por los padres fundadores de la historiografía argentina y retomada por diversas corrientes interpretativas a lo largo del siglo XX, enmarcándose dentro de una caracterización general del ordenamiento jurídico hispano. Será nuestro objetivo analizar el enfoque y las fuentes trabajadas en estas aproximaciones, y al mismo tiempo dar cuenta de los debates historiográficos sobre la temática que se suscitaron en la historiografía internacional. A modo de cierre describiremos la renovación de los estudios sobre afro-argentinos que viene dándose desde la década del "80" y el estado actual del debate, haciendo énfasis en la utilidad que una aproximación comparativa puede tener para dar cuenta de las distintas modalidades que exhibió la integración de los afrodescendientes en las sociedades del continente.

This paper discusses how historiography was shaped by the idea that in the Rio de la Plata would have prevailed a "benign slavery" compared with other regions in the same period. This hypothesis was formulated by the founding fathers of Argentine historiography and by various interpretative traditions throughout the twentieth century, framed within a general characterization of the Spanish legal system. It will be our aim to analyze the point of view and sources worked in these approaches, while accounting for the historiographical debates on the issues that were raised in international historiography. To conclude, we will describe the renewal of Afro-argentine studies that have been taking place since the 80’s and the current state of the debate, stressing the usefulness of a comparative approach could have to account for the different ways of integration of the African-descendants in the continent societies.
