Memoria oficial e inmigración: Los dos nacimientos del Día del Inmigrante en la Argentina

Abstract

La relación entre la inmigración internacional y los procesos de memoria constituye un campo de creciente importancia en la vasta producción sobre migraciones en la Argentina. Partiendo de ese contexto, el trabajo explora un tipo especial de memoria pública, la memoria oficial, tomando como objeto de indagación la celebración del Día del Inmigrante, instaurado, dos veces, en 1949 y 1979. Basado en el análisis de la prensa, el texto reconstruye la evolución de la celebración y propone hipótesis exploratorias sobre la periodización resultante, las causas y significados de los momentos de alza y retroceso de la memoria oficial sobre el tema y su vinculación con otros dispositivos oficiales de memoria.

The relationship between international immigration and memory processes is a field of growing importance in the vast production on migration in Argentina. Starting from this context, the article explores a special type of public memory, the official memory, taking as its inquiry object the celebration of Immigrant Day, established twice, in 1949 and 1979. Based on the analysis of the press, the text reconstructs the evolution of the celebration and proposes exploratory hypotheses about the resulting periodization, the causes and meanings of the rise and decline moments of official memory on the subject and its connection with other official memory devices.
