Memoria, imaginación, archivo; una aproximación a las metáforas de la memoria

Abstract

A lo largo de la historia los diferentes pensadores que se refirieron a la memoria han empleado la metáfora como figura retórica para explicar su funcionamiento (“memoria fotográfica”, “palacios de la memoria”, entre tantas otras). En la actualidad quizá la metáfora que compara al cerebro con una computadora o la metáfora del archivo son las más frecuentadas. Este artículo se propone presentarlas críticamente dando cuenta de sus limitaciones; si bien ellas pueden sugerir cómo se dan los procesos de almacenamiento y sus funciones, resultan insuficientes ante la cuestión del sentido que brinda la memoria. A partir de esas críticas y estableciendo un marco teórico multidisciplinario, donde confluirán las investigaciones de neurocientíficos (Steven Rose, Gerald Edelman), estudios sobre memoria (Aleida Assmann), aportes de sociólogos (Alfred Schutz) y psicólogos (Lev Vygotsky), se apreciará la creatividad como elemento distintivo de la memoria dando espacio, de este modo, para pensar el lugar de la imaginación en nuestra relación con el pasado.

Throughout history different thinkers who addressed memory have used the metaphor as figure of speech to explain its operation (“photographic memory”, “Palaces of Memory”, among many others). Today, perhaps the most used are the metaphor that compares the brain with a computer or the archive metaphor. This article aims to present them critically pointing their limitations, they can suggest how the storage processes works and the functions of memory but they are inadequate in the question of meaning. Based on these reviews and establishing a theoretical framework where neuroscientists (Steven Rose, Gerald Edelman), memory scholars (Aleida Assmann), sociologists (Alfred Schutz) and psychologists (Lev Vygotsky) converge, we will think the memory as a creative process, giving space to think the place of imagination in our relationship with the past.
