Resumen

Osteocalcin (OC) plays a crucial role in glucose homeostasis. OC levels in thecirculation appear to be associated with glucose and fat metabolism; however, stillremains controversial if it is total OC, undercarboxilated OC (ucOC) or both, whichpresents such association. We determined ucOC, total OC, leptin and insulin, in 226adult non-diabetic women, having levels of glucose (80 to 110 mg/dL) andhemoglobin A1c (HbA1c b 5.7%). The presence of overweight or obesity I and IIdegree was determined according to BMI index. Glucose, cholesterol, triglycerides,HbA1c levels were measured by standard laboratory methods; OC (ng/mL), ucOC (ng/mL),leptin (ng/mL), insulin (uUI/L) levels by ELISA and 25hydroxyvitamin D (25OHD) (ng/mL)levels by a competitive protein-binding method. Results (mean ± SD and *: p b 0.05 vs.overweight; (**) p b 0.05 vs obesity I degree) in the next order: ucOC; OC; insulin; leptin.Overweight premenopause: 1.96 ± 1.08; 29.9 ± 2.7; 9.2 ± 3.9;11.1 ± 3.3; perimenopause:2.75 ± 1.22; 31.3 ± 7.3; 5.8 ± 1.1; 9.7 ± 1.7; early menopause:2.20 ± 1.34;35.1 ± 5.3; 6.1 ± 1.7; 9.7 ± 1.1;late menopause:3.81 ± 1.89; 29.1 ± 4.6; 5.2 ± 1.4;7.3 ± 2.5. Obesity degree I premenopause: 2.21 ± 0.98*; 30.0 ± 2.21; 11.7 ± 1.9*;17.8 ± 4.3*; perimenopause 2.93 ± 0.78*; 31.6 ± 5.9; 11.8 ± 2.4*; 18.2 ± 2.4*; earlymenopause:3.41 ± 0.96*; 37.1 ± 9.5; 9.8 ± 1.5*; 20.9 ± 5.2*; late menopause:3.81 ±0.96; 24.9 ± 4.5; 11.8 ± 3.2*; 17.7 ± 6.3* Obesity degree II premenopause: 4.08 ±0.41*,**; 19.9 ± 8.6*,**; 16.0 ± 6.4*,**; 43.7 ± 8.8*,**; perimenopause:4.50 ± 0.22*,**;2.6 ± 11.3*,**; 12.5 ± 2.5*,**; 25.3 ± 6.14*,**; early menopause 4.11 ± 0.6*,**; 21.7 ±4.7*,*; 10.3 ± 1.7*; 27.1 ± 4.4*,**;late menopause:5.52 ± 1.7*,**; 26.9 ± 5.2; 12.8 ±1.8*,**; 31.0 ± 8.2*,* For a same menopausal status, ucOC, insulin and leptin increasedwith the BMI increase, while total OC were decreased only in obesity II degree. For a sameBMI, ucOC showed a tendency to increase with the menopausal status, while total OClevels no changed. Conclusions: Although further studies are needed, the present studysuggests that ucOC would be BMI-dependent in normoglucemic non-diabeticwomen.
