The force of the rights of the indigenous peoples is tied to their own political history, the same one that was articulated between defeats and gradual recoveries, before finally realizing the recognition of a plurinational state (2008). At present Intercultural Bilingual Education (EIB) has already ceased to be an autonomous institution of the Indigenous Movement (MI) -the autonomy disappeared following the approval of the new law of Intercultural Education, January 11 of 2011- this invites us to think about the role of the Indigenous Movement in the attainment of the right to an indigenous education. The MI has maintained their language as a symbol of resistance against the conqueror; nevertheless, the path travelled chronicles something more than the permanency, or resistance of a symbol; it demonstrates the need to define themselves as a people. The present work aims to articulate the historical relation of the MI with the Ecuadoran State as well as the gradual recovery of the right to indigenous education up until the passing of the new law of Intercultural Education of 2011.
