The objective of the study was to conduct a systematic review of empirical studies on the relationship between learning strategies and academic performance in students at the secondary and university level. The databases consulted were, Scopus, SciELO, PUBMED and EBSCO, selecting 56 empirical articles based on the PRISMA guidelines (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses). To assess learning strategies, most studies used the ACRA instrument and, secondly, CEVEAPEU and LASSI. The Hispanic university population would be, in the last 10 years, the most studied. The results indicate that, the use of cognitive strategies, as well as motivational and metacognitive strategies, is related to academic performance in both populations. The implications of the study are discussed to promote the use of strategies that favor self-regulated learning and student´s academic performance.
