Crónica y la malvinización de la derrota: El mundial de Inglaterra 1966 como vehículo de reivindicación soberana

Abstract

La Resolución 2065 (ONU) abrió un nuevo escenario para la diplomacia de Argentina y Reino Unido en su disputa por la soberanía de las Islas Malvinas, favoreciendo a partir de 1966 el desarrollo de los canales bilaterales. En el mes de julio de ese año, se llevó a cabo en Inglaterra una nueva edición del mundial de fútbol. Allí, el equipo argentino avanzó hasta la instancia de cuartos de final, donde fue eliminado por el seleccionado inglés.En un contexto signado por los cambios a nivel interno, como consecuencia del golpe de Estado que dio inicio a un gobierno de facto encabezado por Onganía y por la importancia que adquirió el tema Malvinas entre los actores gubernamentales y no gubernamentales, Crónica llevó adelante la “malvinización de la derrota”, una acción a través de la cual este diario abordó la disputa soberana a través del campeonato mundial de futbol.Partiendo de concebir a los medios de comunicación como actores políticos del ámbito doméstico, capaz de intervenir en la formulación de la política exterior, y al fútbol como “foco de viejos conflictos no resueltos”, en el presente artículo analizaremos la “malvinización de la derrota” considerando las estrategias llevadas adelante por el diario para vincular y analizar la disputa soberana dentro de la cobertura del campeonato mundial de fútbol de 1966.

UN’s Resolution 2065 inaugurated a new scenario for the diplomacy between Argentina and the United Kingdom in their dispute over the sovereignty of the Malvinas Islands. It stimulated from 1966 the development of bilateral channels. In the month of July, a new edition of the FIFA World Cup was held in England. In that opportunity, the Argentine team reached the quarterfinals, when it was eliminated by the English team. In a context surrounded by changes within the country, as a consequence of the coup d'état that gave rise to the lead of Onganía and because of the importance that the Malvinas issue acquired among governmental and non-governmental actors, Crónica promoted the “Malvinization of the defeat”, an action through which this newspaper talked about the sovereign dispute by analysing the FIFA World Cup. As we conceive the media as political actors in the domestic sphere, capable of intervening in the formulation of foreign policy, and football as a "focus of old unresolved conflicts", in this article we will analyze the "malvinization of the defeat”. In order to achieve this, we will consider the strategies carried out by the newspaper to link and analyze the sovereign dispute within the coverage of the 1966 FIFA World Cup.
