dc.description.abstract
dc.description.abstract
This article presents a preliminary proposal for analysis for what has been called “conjunto ecuestre” in the field of the study of colonial rock art. For this purpose, more than 250 motifs distributed between Chile, Argentina, Peru, and Bolivia are analyzed. Common attributes for this significant unit are identified in this iconographic diversity context. The variables considered are the formal composition (design and technique), the form of integration into the pre-existing rock art contexts, the types of sites indicating their public or private/discrete character, the likely discourse to which they are associated (Violence/Evangelization), and the spheres of social interaction of which the conquerors participate. These variables will also enable us to define the irreducible particularities in each of the cases studied. The experimental nature of the exercise we propose here allows us to move forward in the definition of an analytical proposal to understand one of the symbolic components to the interior of colonial rock art from a comparative perspective at the microregional and regional level. Colonial rock art expresses the voice of the original peoples, how they gave meaning to the conquest. While also building each other’s identity from their reference frames. Thus, the analysis of the equestrian figure enables us to understand how to signify the other and in turn incorporate indigenous discourses into a disciplinary context where European writing has prevailed over the original narratives.
