// This paper focuses on the mechanisms of poetic composition in baroque poetry, taking as an example the writing of its most famous American exponent: Sor Juana Inésde la Cruz. The imitatio, the parts of the rhetoric and, above all, the sources of theinventio are reviewed. Better than due to the idea of originality, the operations of thebaroque poets are explained as exercises in virtuosity. Those exercises tend to achievevariations on recognizable forms and themes in tradition. That virtuosity led to anextremely complex writing and, with it, the need for literary criticism as thehermeneutic of secular texts.
