This article analyzes the role of the territorial dimension in the conformation of the agency and indigenous political identities in the Pampas and Patagonia between the second half of the 18th century and the first half of the 19th century. We start by reviewing of recent research that allows us to account for the specificity of indigenous territorial logic and discuss the mechanical association between ethnicity, territory, and political units to focus on regional-scale articulations and highlight the dynamic and historical character of indigenous territorial identities. We propose some reading keys to identify the main continuities and discontinuities operated in the configuration and linkages of territories and relationships within the Puelmapu, resulting from the indigenous agency, its mercantile articulations that extended to the borders, and the state policies that conditioned her.
