The Situated Theory

Abstract

This chapter explores the relationship between women’s experiences and gender violence in the Paraná Tri-Border Area (TBA) (between Argentina, Brazil, and Paraguay). First, it discusses the analytical categories that, together with the concept of care (discussed in Chap. 1), form the starting point of this book. Therefore, it offers a synthesis of our theoretical position on violence, establishing its links with the notion of gender mandates and the patriarchal division between public and private spaces. In addition, it discusses the relationship between gender violence and borders in Latin America, focusing on the territories between Mexico and the USA. Second, it reviews the main findings of studies on gender violence in the Paraná TBA, addressing three central problems: (1) trafficking of women and minors for sexual purposes; (2) cross-border mobility and female productive/reproductive overload, and (3) intersectional discrimination suffered by rural female workers and the dispossession of their families’ farmlands.
