dc.description.abstract
The denomination “Phase 0” and “Phase III” transport refers, respectively, to the uptake and efflux transport mechanisms in drug elimination organs. It expands the classic Phase I and Phase II classification of drug-metabolizing reactions, reflecting the highly coordinated functions of biotransformation enzymes and xenobiotic transporters. Phase 0 transport and Phase III transport have sometimes been termed Phase 0 and Phase III metabolism and Phase 0 and Phase III reactions, which might be misleading denominations as the substrate of drug transport systems is not chemically modified during the transport process.
