La construcción social de la propia muerte. El suicidio y el habitus aristocrático de la elite del Imperio Romano: una Reflexión a partir de ejemplos de Plinio el Joven y Tácito

Abstract

Las elites del Principado tienen una relación muy particular con el suicidio, al que consideran como una forma aceptable y hasta particularmente honorable de muerte. El objetivo de este trabajo es llevar el análisis de los suicidios aristocráticos del Principado del ámbito de las ideas filosóficas y su influencia, al de las prácticas sociales y sus condicionantes. Más precisamente, mi intención es argumentar que el proceso de construcción del modelo aristocrático de la muerte voluntaria romana, más allá de la influencia indiscutible de la filosofía estoica, responde también a las disposiciones del habitus de la elite senatorial y ecuestre del Principado, en el cual se integra dentro de las prácticas de afianzamiento simbólico de la posición en el espacio social.

The elites of the High Roman Empire had a peculiar view of suicide, which they regarded as an acceptable and even particularly honorable form of death. The objective of this work is to take the analysis of the aristocratic suicides of the High Roman Empire from the field of philosophical ideas and their influence, to the social practices and their contexts. More precisely, my intention is to argue that the process of constructing the aristocratic model of voluntary Roman death, beyond the indisputable influence of Stoic philosophy, also responds to the dispositions of the habitus of the Roman senatorial and equestrian elite, in which is integrated within the practices of symbolic strengthening of the position in the social space.
