En el mundo-barrio: Circulación de noticias y expansión informativa en los diarios porteños del siglo XIX

Abstract

Este trabajo se interroga sobre los horizontes de mundo ofrecidos a los lectores en la prensa porteña de las últimas cuatro décadas del siglo XIX, haciendo foco en los efectos de la incorporación de los cables submarinos como herramienta de acceso informativo. Partiendo de tres diarios conocidos por su ambición modernizante (La Tribuna, La Prensa y La Nación), analiza las lógicas de circulación informativa subyacentes que permitieron la expansión de cobertura espacial. En este marco, argumenta que la gran expansión de noticias internacionales ocurrida a fines del siglo modificó el horizonte espacial de maneras contradictorias, que combinan la intensificación de ciertas zonas, el alejamiento de otras, y el efecto de una conciencia de mundo difusa compuesta por la sincronía de numerosos puntos del planeta.

This article explores notions of the outside world offered to the readers of the Buenos Aires press in the last four decades of the 19th Century, paying special attention to the effect of the submarine cables in the access to international news. Focusing on three newspapers that were known for their modernizing bent (La Tribuna, La Prensa and La Nación), it analyzes the underlying logics of news circulation that allowed for the expansion in the spatial coverage. It argues that the great expansion of international news occurred at the end of the century modified the spatial horizon in ways that were contradictory, combining the intensification of certain areas and the blurring of others, while creating an overall consciousness of the world that stemmed from the synchronic presence of numerous point of the planet.
