Variaciones de la memoria vegetal: plantas que materializan historias

Abstract

Lo vegetal ha sido desde siempre un tema central para el arte. Ya sea representado como paisaje o naturaleza muerta, u operando formalmente a través de la incorporación modernista de la estructura orgánica en las composiciones plásticas y arquitectónicas, el cuerpo vegetal insiste como tema o motivo ineludible de la producción imaginaria. Sin embargo, en esta insistencia, algo de los cuerpos vegetales parece quedar impensado como tal. En este artículo señalaremos los rasgos de lo vegetal que se hacen manifiestos en algunas obras de arte contemporáneas ligadas a la memoria (sobre todo ligada a los genocidios de Estado), y donde lo vegetal deviene “materia con historia” (Iovino y Oppermann). Retomando así esta denominación de la ecocrítica materialista, nos interesa mostrar hasta qué punto los cuerpos vegetales dejan de funcionar como pantalla en que la “representación” acontece. Antes bien, según argumentaremos, los cuerpos vegetales cuentan unas historias que desplazan de forma radical el punto de vista antropocentrado de la expresión, a la vez que indican el punto ciego de las memorias del horror construidas desde lo humano.

The vegetable has always been a central theme for art. Whether as landscape or still life, or formally operating through the modernist incorporation of organic structures in the plastic and architectural compositions, the vegetable body seems to insist as theme or motive of the imagination. However, in this insistence, something of the vegetable bodies seems to be unthinkable as such. In this article we will point out the aspects of the plant arise in some contemporary works of art linked to memory (especially linked to genocides of State), and in which the vegetable becomes “storied matter” (Iovino y Oppermann). Taking up the name of materialist eco-criticism in this way, we are interested in showing to what extent plant bodies stop working as a screen in which “representation” occurs. Rather, as we argue, plant bodies tell stories that radically displace the anthropocentralized point of view of expression, while also indicating the blind spot of human-made memories of horror.
