¿Reír o no reír?: Humor redentor y el Holocausto

Abstract

En los debates en torno a las “representaciones adecuadas” sobre los genocidios y crímenes de masa se suele discutir el lugar del humor; así, surge la pregunta si el Holocausto, “el crimen de crímenes”, es factible de ser representado desde esa perspectiva. Lo cierto es que ha habido producciones culturales humorísticas sobre el Holocausto no solo después del hecho sino durante el nazismo mientras el crimen tenía lugar. Incluso han sido también las propias víctimas quienes recurrían a esta modalidad para atravesar los duros y excepcionales momentos, quizás los últimos, que vivían. En el presente escrito me propongo analizar el humor durante el Holocausto y los años del nazismo siguiendo algunas caracterizaciones del sociólogo Peter Berger sobre lo cómico. Esta perspectiva teórica permitirá comprender al humor no sólo como un elemento crucial de la experiencia humana sino también, en condiciones adversas y acuciantes, como un conjuro de las limitaciones humanas y como una promesa de redención.

In the debates about the “appropriate representations” of genocide and mass crimes, the place of humor is often discussed; thus, the question arises whether the Holocaust, “the crime of crimes”, is feasible to be represented from that perspective. The truth is that there have been humorous cultural productions about the Holocaust not only after the Second World War but during all the Nazi period and while the crime was taking place. It has even been the victims themselves who have resorted to this modality to get through the hard and exceptional moments, perhaps the last ones, that they lived through. In this paper I intend to analyze the humor during the Holocaust and the Nazi years by following some characterizations by the sociologist Peter Berger on the comic. This theoretical perspective will allow to understand humor not only as a crucial element of human experience but also, in adverse and pressing conditions, as a spell of human limitations and as a promise of redemption.
