In Buenos Aires, towards the beginning of democracy, an «underground» cultural movement was formed, which transcended for its strong creative effervescence. In those years, the young Batato Barea arrived from a town in the Province of Buenos Aires. Once in the city he began to experiment with the scenic arts, dance and singing, as well as to weave networks of friendship and creative work. His growing prominence on the «under» scene soon earned him the recognition of his peers and the press as one of the main references of this counter-cultural movement. Around 1989, the artist Marcia Schvartz portrayed him in a large painting. In April 1990, the painter and the actor were invited to make an installation next to the painting at the Museum of Modern Art in Buenos Aires, consummating a consecrating event. This article analyzes the portrait «Batato» as a way to enter the life of the actor and his links with the «underground» scene of the 1980s. Firstly, we will reflect on the painting its components and the negotiations between the portraitist and the portrayed, to think about the uniqueness of this image in its context. Secondly, through the mentioned exhibition, we will address the reasons why, at the beginning of the 1990s, the productions of the «underground» of the 1980s, acquired a greater prominence for the artistic institutions and the critics.
