Las lenguas indígenas y los jesuitas: El P. Luis de Valdivia al rescate del mapudungun, allentiac y el millcayac

Abstract

El jesuita Luis de Valdivia pasó sus últimos días en Valladolid después de haber transitado una intensa vida en América. Es el objetivo del presente trabajo avanzar en el conocimiento histórico de los libros lingüísticos del granadino, sin abordar el tema desde una perspectiva filológica ni lingüística. Ofrecemos un panorama del contexto e importancia que tuvieron las lenguas indígenas para los jesuitas y en especial la obra de este singular personaje que comprendió que el estudio de las lenguas era, en este caso, un camino para alcanzar una paz que lamentablemente nunca llegó. Estos textos fueron en consecuencia, fundamentales a la hora de emprender las primeras misiones entre los araucanos y huarpes.

The Jesuit Luis de Valdivia spent his last days in Valladolid after an intense life in America. The aim of the present work is to advance in the historical knowledge of the linguistic books of the Granada-born Jesuit, without approaching the subject from a philological or linguistic perspective. We offer an overview of the context and importance of the indigenous languages for the Jesuits and especially the work of this singular character who understood that the study of languages was, in this case, a way to reach a peace that unfortunately never came. These texts were therefore fundamental when it came to undertaking the first missions among the Araucanians and Huarpes.
