Los volcanes Eldfell, Helgafell, Heimaklettur y el paisaje cultural de las Islas Westman (Islandia)

Abstract

El archipiélago de las islas Westman se encuentra ubicado al sur de Islandia, en un remoto rincón del Atlántico Norte. Fue colonizado por esclavos de origen irlandés, fugados de colonias vikingas islandesas durante el siglo IX AD. Pese a los rigores del clima, el crónico aislamiento y los históricos ataques de piratas, los habitantes insulares desarrollaron una estrategia de subsistencia basada en la caza de mamíferos marinos, la pesca y la recolección de huevos de aves en los abruptos acantilados montañosos. En 1973, casi todos los pobladores fueron evacuados por una intensa erupción volcánica, que sepultó varias viviendas y convirtió a la aldea de pescadores de Heimaey en la llamada Pompeya del norte. El presente trabajo analiza, desde una perspectiva antropológica, la articulación entre paisaje volcánico y patrimonio cultural en las islas Westman, en base a experiencias de campo que incluyen ascensiones a los volcanes Eldfell, Helgafell y monte Heimaklettur, entrevistas informales con pobladores insulares y visitas al área histórica de Skansinn, el museo folclórico de Sagnheimar, el acuario de Saheimar y el museo volcánico de Eldheimar.

The Westman Islands archipelago is located south of Iceland, in a remote corner of the North Atlantic. It was colonized by slaves of Irish origin, escaped from Icelandic Viking colonies during the 9th century AD. The island inhabitants developed a subsistence based on hunting marine mammals, fishing and collecting bird eggs on the steep mountain cliffs. In addition to the rigors of the climate, chronic isolation and historical pirate attacks, the settlers were evacuated by an intense volcanic eruption in 1973, which turned the fishing village of Heimaey into the so called “Pompeii of the North”. This paper analyzes, from an anthropological perspective, the articulation between volcanic landscape and cultural heritage in the Westman Islands, based on field experiences that include ascents to the Eldfell, Helgafell and Mount Heimaklettur volcanoes, informal interviews with island villagers and visits to the historic Skansinn area, the Sagnheimar folk museum, the Saheimar aquarium and the Eldheimar volcanic museum.
